Origin of SUNSIMWON
‘SAM(ginseng)’ originates from a native word, ‘SIM.’
Even though ginseng was discovered and used on the Korean Peninsula centuries ago, our ancestors couldn’t write “ginseng” in Korean because they didn’t have their own written language before King Sejong.
Ginseng appeared in Chinese literature for the first time during the era of earlier Han when the Four Commanderies of Han were established. The Four Commanderies of Han were counties and prefectures established by Wudi (WU-TI) who brought China together in the northwest regions of Gojoseon, the ancient kingdom on the Korean Peninsula at that time. China and ancient countries on the Korean Peninsula conducted trade even back then.
Korean ginseng was delivered to China, and it became well-known for its effectiveness and considered a precious medicine. This is recorded in several pieces of Chinese literature at the time.
From ancient times, our ancestors called ginseng ‘sim.’
The oldest literature in which ‘sim’ appears is ≪ Gugeup Gani Bang>> (Summary of Medical Emergency Methods) compiled in the 20th year of King Seongjong’s reign. (1489 A.D.).
In this piece of literature, ‘ginseng’ was written as 人蔘 (sansam), but when it was spoken it sounded like ‘sim.’
In the language study book ≪Nogeoldaeunhae(老乞大諺解) ≫, ‘ginseng (人蔘, sansam),’ became ‘sim’ in Korean.
In ‘A Chapter on Ginseng’ from the eastern medicinal manual called ≪Donguibogam by Heo Jun≫, ‘ginseng (人蔘, sansam),’ is known as ‘sim’ in Korean.
In ≪Classes of Mulmyeong≫ by Yoo Hee, ‘ginseng (人蔘, sansam),’ was written as ‘sim’ in Korean.
It is not known that how the name ‘sim’ originated, but it has referred to ginseng in the native tongue for many generations.
Objects imported from the outside are called by their original names.
By this principle, a Korean cigarette [dambae] came from the word ‘tobacco,’ [nampo] from ‘lamp,’ and [naembi], or ‘pot,’ from nabe.
Likewise, as ginseng was delivered to China, it is thought that the original Korean name followed it.
At that time, it would have been necessary for the Chinese to create a new Chinese word to describe ‘sim’ when it was first introduced.
And thus, these six Chinese characters, 參•蔘•寑•寖•浸•侵, which when read in Chinese [śi em] were similar to ‘sim,’ appeared in Chinese literature.
he Chinese eventually selected ‘the name ‘sochim (疏侵)’ as it encompassed both Korean and Chinese syllables.
This can be seen as the word ‘sim’ takes the Korean ‘s’ sound [ㅅ] and changes it to the Chinese ‘So [소]’ and the Korean ‘im’ [ㅣㅁ] stays the same in Korean but becomes ‘Chim [침].
